According to recent news articles, the Social Security disability program is projected to run out of money in 2017 or 2018. The number of applications has skyrocketed in the last few years, and the program pays out more money than it’s taking in via Social Security taxes.
If you’ve applied for social security disability, you know what a bureaucratic nightmare the process can be. I can think of 100 ways the program could save money. But I get really upset when I read articles that say that “weak eligibility standards” are to blame for the financial crisis. It’s easy to point fingers at other people and make assumptions that they don’t deserve the benefits, but the truth is that it’s very difficult to qualify for disability.
A number of different factors determine whether you’re eligible. It’s incredibly complicated, and each case is different.
