What is an ignition interlock device?

A: An ignition interlock device prevents your car from starting if you blow a breath sample that registers a blood alcohol content of .05 or more. On a first DUI, the judge has the discretion to require you to get one before you can get your license reinstated, but most judges don't require it. If your blood alcohol level was .15 or higher or if there was a minor child in the car, it's mandatory. Convictions for subsequent DUIs require the ignition interlock device under certain circumstances.
