July 9, 2010 - Daytona Beach, FL - Gun advocates in Florida are up in arms about measures by the Daytona Beach police to catch a serial killer that has long evaded capture.
The Palm Beach Post reports that Police Chief Michael J. Chitwood has contacted Central Florida gun shops in an effort to get contact information on anyone who purchased the type of gun believed to have been used in as many as 4 murders.
Investigators believe that a murder suspect used a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson Sigma series pistol in the murders of 4 women. The serial killer case has been cold for 6 years, causing police to get creative in their efforts to locate the murderer.
Those opposed to the measure say that this type of investigation is illegal in Florida, as state law prohibits any government agency, including police, from requesting such information. The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun advocates who support gun-owners' rights continue to fight against the creation of a Florida gun registry.
The police will not comment on how many gun shops or which gun shops have been contacted in this investigation.
